I prayerfully request that we continue to refrain from gathering, with other parishioners, in public groups, without masks. In Lancaster County, we continue to move towards wider distribution of vaccines, and within our diocese, we are adhering to the same safety protocols we submitted in 2020 for our in-person worship.  We are all in this together, and honoring our parish community, by continuing to comply with the recommendations set forth during this time, conveys our love for God in Christ, the members of our parish family, and the wider community.

Happy first day of spring!  Being outside, today, gave us clear evidence of God’s love for all creation.

As we continue our Lenten journey, we are often reminded, that life is filled with hard work and suffering and that God calls us to walk that upward road.  But we also know that, in Him, we have a fellow traveler.  Whatever your journey may be, let us pray, tonight:

For Travelers 
O God, our heavenly Father, whose glory fills the whole creation, and whose presence we find wherever we go: Preserve those who travel; surround them with your loving care; protect them from every danger; and bring them in safety to their journey’s end; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A few friendly reminders for those returning to in-person worship and for those new to our in-person worship:
– We will have ushers/greeters inside the narthex and they will have the service bulletins for you.  We will also continue to take your name and contact information.

– Please do not forget to wear your mask.

– Ushers will direct you to pew locations to maintain social distancing and will also guide you during communion.

– As we will not pass the offering plate, it will be located on the pedestal at the back of the church for you to place your Sunday offerings.

– On the shelf in the narthex are materials that you may find of interest to take home with you, as well as the sign up sheet for Easter flowers with envelopes for your donation.

We continue to honor the guidance delivered by our bishop, as well as our love for God in Christ, to care for one another, by remaining socially distanced, and refrain from in-person fellowship gathering.  There are many opportunities for us to worship, and perform ministry, in community, in ways that are of comfort to us, during this continued Covidtide. Our 6:30 AM Sunrise Service will be weather permitting.  We will also offer in-person worship at 8:00 AM – Rite I and 10:15 AM- Rite II.  The 10:15 AM service will be live streamed.  Our weekly email will detail our Holy Week service offerings.

Please continue your support of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Let us continue our tradition of generosity for those less fortunate than ourselves.  Requested food items for the month of March are:

Large peanut butter
Large jelly
Canned corn
Canned carrots
Canned mixed vegetables
Mac and cheese
2 pound package of dried pinto beans

Soles 4 Souls: St. Edward’s, with Saint John’s of Lancaster will collect shoes through Palm Sunday, March 28th and we invite parishioners to donate used shoes. The shoes can be lightly used to falling apart. Collection boxes will be placed in the sanctuary. Please tie any laced shoes together and rubber band all other shoe types. There is also a need for shipping boxes approximately the size of an office paper box. Any questions can be directed to our outreach ministry members: Lynch’s, Milligan’s, Ishler’s, Peg Reiley, or Leslie Arnold.

During our Lenten journey, we have been asked to rest, remember, and now, as we approach the Fourth Sunday in Lent, we are asked to repent.  These aspects are all part of the process of lament.  As we lament, we seek forgiveness, and we are called to forgive others.  Repentance can be a journey into darkness, but that does not mean it has to be, or feel, “bad.”  Throughout our lives, we must travel through darkness, to find the light, around us, and in us; the light that God provides. And the act of forgiveness, does not mean that we forget, but that we can start to move forward.

In our spiritual formation groups this week (please consider joining us!), we have touched on the aspect of darkness.  In an email to Father Rick and I, Rayelenn Casey shared a 24-hour Day of Prayer that she was participating in coming from the Leicester Cathedral in the UK with the theme of “Dazzling Darkness” and their motto: “God made the darkness and pronounced it good.”  In our Friday Lunch & Learn, Dina Ishler shared a link to the poem “The Night” by Henry Vaughan, which you can find here.

A daily discipline of mine is to walk 5 miles.  Many times, especially during Lent, I walk in the darkness of evening, taking in the mysteries of the night sky, while listening to a playlist of music that I purposely allow to be selected for me.  Last night, as I was finishing my walkabout, a song popped up in my ears that I had never heard before, but the lyrics that were repeated throughout the entire 7-minute ambient music piece were meditative to me:

Don’t think about all those things you fear
Just be glad to be here (Just be glad to be here)

We close with a prayer from page 831 in The Book of Common Prayer

For a Person in Trouble or Bereavement
O merciful Father, who has taught us in your holy Word that you do not willingly afflict or grieve our children: Look with pity upon the sorrows of all your servants for whom our prayers are offered. Remember them, O Lord, in mercy, nourish their soul with patience, comfort them with a sense of your goodness, lift up your countenance upon them, and give them peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Edward’s Thursday Message – March 11th

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

What a gorgeous day it was today!  We hope that wherever you were, you were able to take the time to step outside, soak in the sun’s rays, breathe in the fresh air, and marvel at how the wildlife that has been silent for months, sang their songs and bustled about, preparing for a new season.  The wonder of God’s creation.

As we marvel at our natural world, and meditate and pray on this day, I reflect on words that were in one of my Lenten daily prayer disciplines from A Diary of Private Prayer by John Baillie:

“Do not let me rest content with an ideal of humanity that is less than what was shown to us in Jesus.  Give me the mind of Christ.  May I listen to Jesus’ question: What are you doing more than others? And so may the three Christian graces of faith, hope, and love be more and more formed within me, until all I do and say brings honor to Jesus and his gospel.”

Words to live by.

As we mentioned in Monday’s email message: peace is “the tranquility of order” and we asked for people to share their reflections.  I would like to pass along a lovely reflection Rayelenn shared with us from one verse from the hymn “Dear Lord and Father of Mankind”:

Drop Thy still dews of quietness,
Till all our strivings cease;
Take from our souls the strain and stress,
And let our ordered lives confess
The beauty of Thy peace.

St. Edward’s Monday Message – March 8th

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

As we continue on our Lenten journey, and are at a midpoint, we may find that our travels have opened the eyes of our souls, allowing us to know ourselves in ways that can restore our flow and energy so that we can be guided to new directions.

In an email communication with my 89-year old uncle last week, I “signed off” in a way that I close most of my emails and notes – “With peace.”  His reaction was that he was “pleased and amused” by my words and informed me that in his spiritual life and study, he found Saint Thomas Aquinas teaching, peace is “the tranquility of order,” very meaningful to him in ordering the priorities in his life.  I was moved by his words, as we so often pray for peace and wish people peace.

What I discovered was that “orderliness” does not necessarily have to be complete and perfected to find peace. It can be a rhythm you bring to your life – finding quiet places for prayer and meditation; taking a walk in nature; helping others; calling a friend; listening to music; or exploring an artistic talent or a favorite hobby that can help you to order your thoughts, aspirations, and in figuring out what is important (and what can be discarded), helping one to be “with peace” even while living in an imperfect world that can be chaotic and disordered.   And, we remember that peace begins in our relationship with God.

As Father Rick+ closed his sermon, yesterday, he reminded us: “We are all living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, and accepting hardships as the pathways to peace. We are each houses of the Holy, and together, we are the Church.”

We offer you these few passages of Scripture.  Maybe you have a favorite passage you can share with us, and with those you love, that offers a reflection of peace. 

If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. (Romans 12:18)

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. (John 14:27)

Soles for Souls:  St. Edward’s is participating in a shoe drive with Saint John’s of Lancaster during the Lenten season. As we pray and ponder during this season of Lent, we invite you to consider participating in a free course (upcoming in the near future) that will be offered by The Stevenson School for Ministry.  Using the framework of the Episcopal Church’s “Becoming a Beloved Community” this course on antiracism will lead participants through four pillars rooted in the Baptismal Covenant: Telling the Truth about the Church and Race; Proclaiming the Dream of Beloved Community; Practicing the Way of Love; Repairing the Breach in our Churches; and Repairing the Breach in Society and Institutions. As we continue our Lenten journey, let us remember that we are guided to love our enemies as ourselves.  There is so much more power in love, than hate.  Fruitful, good, and unifying power that brings us closer, in community, as we are called to be – One.

Tonight, as we prepare to gather in worship and in fellowship for our Annual Parish Meeting tomorrow (it will be good to “see” everyone!!!) let us pray:

For the Future of the Human Race
O God our heavenly Father, you have blessed us and given us dominion over all the earth: Increase our reverence before the mystery of life; and give us new insight into your purposes for the human race, and new wisdom and determination in making provision for its future in accordance with your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Please continue your support of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. Let us continue our tradition of generosity for those less fortunate than ourselves.  Requested food items for the month of March are:

Large peanut butter
Large jelly
Canned corn
Canned carrots
Canned mixed vegetables
Mac and cheese
2 pound package of dried pinto beans

Soles 4 Souls: St. Edward’s, with Saint John’s of Lancaster will collect shoes through Palm Sunday, March 28th and we invite parishioners to donate used shoes. The shoes can be lightly used to falling apart. Collection boxes will be placed in the sanctuary. Please tie any laced shoes together and rubber and other types. There is also a need for shipping boxes approximately the size of an office paper box. Any questions can be directed to our outreach ministry members: Lynch’s, Milligan’s, Ishler’s, Peg Reiley, or Leslie Arnold.

We have an important weekend to look forward to as we journey into our Third Sunday in Lent, followed by our Annual Parish Meeting immediately after the service.   Please take the time, if you can, tomorrow, to stop by the church between 11 AM – 3 PM to pick up your Annual Report, a copy of the March Scepter, your 2020 Giving Statement, consecrated wafers, and a special St. Edward’s mug we have had made for our parishioners – something to sip your warm beverage from during our livestreamed Sunday services or to take to our Zoom coffee hours & meetings!

As our Thursday emails are dedicated to the spiritual offerings we offer between Friday noon – Sunday evening, outside of our Sunday 10 AM Rite II service, please know that we have listed details to several opportunities for prayer and reflection, below.

As we continue our Lenten journey and we discover the power of remembrance, let us know that in remembering, there is reconciliation, and in reconciliation, there is love. The power of love – loving our neighbors as ourselves, loving the rhythms of our day, in whatever it may bring, and letting it wash over us, loving our natural environment as much as we love the material things within our own homes, and creating beloved community show our love of God and for Jesus Christ our Lord.  Let us “sow the seeds of love” in our daily lives.

We close with a Psalm verse from page 115 in the BCP – Daily Evening Prayer:  Rite Two

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. Psalm 16:7, 8

St. Edward’s Monday Message – March 1st

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

Here we are in March!  In a couple weeks we will be “springing forward” with Daylight Savings Time where the days will be a bit longer and the trees and flowers will begin to spring open in the way nature so gloriously transforms before our very eyes at this time of year.  And. . .we continue our Lenten journey.  We are guided that remembrance is a part of our journey and is a part of the process of lament.  Trusting in God’s love to give us strength to endure the pain of remembering may help us to transform ourselves, strengthening our spirit, to enable us to help with the burdens of others.

As we continue to look inward along our journey, let us pray that it allows us to be become more spiritually connected and giving in outward ways. Tonight we offer:

A Prayer of Self-Dedication
Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to thee, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly thine, utterly dedicated unto thee; and then use us, we pray thee, as thou wilt, and always to thy glory and the welfare of thy people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Soles for Souls:  St. Edward’s is participating in a shoe drive with Saint John’s of Lancaster during the Lenten season. I prayerfully request that we continue to refrain from gathering with other parishioners in public groups, particularly in restaurants, indoor spaces, or even outdoors without masks. COVID-19 is not a hoax.  We are all in this together, and honoring our parish community, by complying with the recommendations set forth during this time, conveys our love for God in Christ, the members of our parish family, and the wider community.

While we are in prayer, this evening, for all who have died from COVID-19, we especially remember Father Stephen+ and keep in our prayers Rayelenn, Emily, Elizabeth, Sadie, and Emma.

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. We normally do not address parish business in the Saturday emails but there are 3 important pieces of information for everyone to be aware of:

(1)  As promised, the church membership to BJ’s has been renewed.  If you currently hold a membership card, you can now visit the store to renew your individual membership.  If you are interested in joining BJ’s, under the St. Edward’s membership, please contact the parish office for the document you would need to bring to customer service.  Our church membership allows individuals to receive a discounted yearly rate.

(2)  2020 Giving Statements are completed, printed out, and in the parish office.  If you would like your statement emailed to you, this week, please let the parish office know.  There will be an opportunity for you to stop by church, this Thursday & Friday, to pick up consecrated wafers and materials for the March 7th Annual Meeting, so you could pick up your statement at that time. If statements are not requested to be sent via email, or picked up, this week, we will mail them out by week’s end.   We want to thank everyone for their understanding and patience, as we were delayed in the generating of the statements for 2020.

(3)  Please look for a separate email at the beginning of the week that specifically addresses the Annual Meeting Zoom details, when to pick up your Annual Meeting materials, as well as voting via absentee ballot if you are unable to attend the March 7th meeting.  This is a very important event in the life of our parish, so we encourage all, who are able, to attend!

2 pound package of dried pinto beans

Soles 4 Souls: St. Edward’s, with Saint John’s of Lancaster will collect shoes through Palm Sunday, March 28th and we invite parishioners to donate used shoes. The shoes can be lightly used to falling apart. Collection boxes will be placed in the sanctuary. Please tie any laced shoes together and rubber and other types. There is also a need for shipping boxes approximately the size of an office paper box. Any questions can be directed to our outreach ministry members: Lynch’s, Milligan’s, Ishler’s, Peg Reiley, or Leslie Arnold.

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

As we journey towards our Second Sunday in Lent, please know that we have several spiritual offerings between now and our 10:00 AM Sunday  Rite II service. These can be silent and contemplative moments, or moments spent in community of spiritual formation, prayer, and lament. We continue to rest, reflect, repent, and recharge, using these shared and silent spaces as a way to know more about ourselves, to show our love for one another, and to be comforted in knowing that we are constantly renewed with God’s strength. The details for our offerings are listed below.

As we enter this evening, let us pray a Collect for our protection through the night (BCP 133) and let us pray for Joy in God’s Creation (BCP 814) for the blessings of this beautiful day.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Worship News:
We continue to offer consecrated wafers for our service of Holy Eucharist this Sunday, safely packaged and available in the narthex.  Please enter through our front doors between the hours of 11 AM – 3 PM, Monday – Friday.  If you are in need of delivery of wafers, Scepters, etc. please contact the parish office.  


The Way of the Cross Lenten Weekly Devotion
We extend a warm invitation to our parishioners, and to those in the wider community, to participate in this weekly devotion on Fridays during the season of Lent. We thank Edward Webber for his wonderful artwork, capturing each of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. It is our sincere hope that this will serve as an invitation to prayer and contemplation as we continue to worship from our homes.
