Worship at St. Edward’s: Tenth Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 13 – August 1, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

Father Rick and all of us at St. Edward’s welcome you to our Sunday worship, tomorrow, the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost:  Proper 13.  Whether you will be joining us in-person, or via our live stream on our St. Edward’s YouTube Channel, please know we are glad to be worshipping with you!  All of the important links you need to our YouTube channel and our Sunday service bulletins are listed below.

As we prepare for a new week and our day of simplicity, it is amazing to witness God’s eternal creation in the rising sun and the blue sky.  As I put together packets of consecrated wafers for those who cannot attend in-person worship but would like to receive communion in one kind as they watch our Sunday service, I meditate on the Invitation we place on each packet:  “Feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.” And it is this very Invitation that reminds us, we walk by faith, not by sight, and we walk in love, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Blessing, on this beautiful day, from Earth Gospel

May you go out today in peace,
believing in God’s power to transform all creation,
including you.

Rest well.  Keep the faith. Journey in peace.

Michelle

Faith In Action Initiatives:

Backpack Drive
It’s Back-to-School time again!  As in the past, we will be helping Hempfield students be prepared for school; but, this year will be a little different.  Instead of collecting crayons, pencils, etc., we will be collecting backpacks!  Specifically, we are looking for backpacks for older students.  Think plain colors and large sized.  If you’re not sure of what to buy, you may donate by writing a check to St. Ed’s with ‘backpack drive’ on the memo line and Faith in Action will buy the backpack.  All backpacks will be donated to Hempfield Student Services.  School social workers will gift the backpacks to the students that they work with and help in other ways.  Any additional funds will go toward replacement ipad charging cords.  We are off to a fantastic start – more than 10 backpacks have been donated to date.  Keep them coming and thank you!!

Hempfield Area Food Pantry Update:

Worship at St. Edward’s: Seventh Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 10 – July 11, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

Father Rick and all of us at St. Edward’s welcome you to our Sunday worship, tomorrow, the Seventh Sunday after Pentecost:  Proper 10.  Whether you will be joining us in-person, or via our live stream on our St. Edward’s YouTube Channel, please know we are glad to be worshipping with you!  All of the important links you need to our YouTube channel and our Sunday service bulletins are listed below.

Tomorrow, July 11th, is the Feast Day for Benedict of Nursia, Abbot of Monte Cassino. You may be familiar with St. Benedict by his writing, the Rule of Saint Benedict (516) for monks living communally under the authority of an abbot.  It combined the spiritual with the administrative tasks of their daily life.  A meaningful aspect of this writing is Ora et Labora – pray and work, meant to provide a guidance, in the monastic day, for balance between prayer, work, contemplation and/or charitable works.  It also elevated the dignity of labor in the service of God.  In reflection, maybe we can all take a little bit from the Rule of Saint Benedict and apply it to our daily lives.  We close by offering this Collect Of a Saint from The Book of Common Prayer, page 250:

Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit you have made us one with your saints in heaven and on earth: Grant that in our earthly pilgrimage we may always be supported by this fellowship of love and prayer, and know ourselves to be surrounded by their witness to your power and mercy. We ask this for the sake of Jesus Christ, in whom all our intercessions are acceptable through the Spirit, and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Worship at St. Edward’s: Second Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 5 – June 6, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

Night & Day – St. Edward’s is a vibrant community filled with life, spiritual gifts, and love.  Thanks be to God.

We gather tomorrow to celebrate the Second Sunday after Pentecost:  Proper 5.

We invite you to join us, in the worship discipline you are comfortable with, in-person or livestream via our St. Edward’s YouTube channel.

As always, we welcome you for in-person worship!  If you are at home, please know that we gather together, in community, for this Second Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 5 service, and you will find all the necessary links to connect to our 10:15 AM Sunday service on the St. Edward’s YouTube channel, as well as the service bulletins, noted below.

I offer this passage for Saturday from the devotional, Earth Gospel, by Sam Hamilton Poore.  It is under “Other Voices” which follows a pause for prayer and meditation following the Scripture readings for the evening.  It is attributed to Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) who was a lay member of the Dominican Order.  She is remembered on The Calendar of the Church Year on April 29th. (Book of Common Prayer, p. 20).

“The reason why God’s servants love [God’s] creatures so deeply is that they realize how deeply Christ loves them.  And it is the very character of love to love what is loved by those we love.”

Be well.  Keep the faith. Journey in peace.

Michelle

Worship at St. Edward’s – Palm Sunday, March 28, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

We welcome you to information regarding the return of our in-person worship, online worship essential links, and ministry offerings for this Sunday, Palm Sunday.  All essential links are noted below.

I prayerfully request that we continue to refrain from gathering, with other parishioners, in public groups, without masks. In Lancaster County, we continue to move towards wider distribution of vaccines, and within our diocese, we are adhering to the same safety protocols we submitted in 2020 for our in-person worship.  We are all in this together, and honoring our parish community, by continuing to comply with the recommendations set forth during this time, conveys our love for God in Christ, the members of our parish family, and the wider community.

As we enter this holiest of weeks, we are in deep prayer and silence, relying on our strong hearts, our willing hearts, and our believing hearts to endure the burdens of this life as we walk in the way of the cross and remember our Lord Jesus Christ, and all that he gave, of himself, for us.

Saint Paul said:  Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you.

Be well.  Stay safe.  Keep the faith.

This evening,  please join those, near and far, as the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania offers to us a very special service:

Out of the Depths: a liturgy of remembrance for those we love who died from COVID-19
Saturday, February 27 at 6 pm

Zoom Webinar Link
https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_dGLVanOwQ5mM-9pv1E93-A. The liturgy will also be streamed to Facebook Live here.

You are invited to have a candle ready to light in remembrance of those who have died.

The service bulletin can be found here. For more information, click here.

If you would like to include your loved one in the prayers during worship, or have any questions, please contact The Rev. Canon Chris Streeter at [email protected].

While we are in prayer, this evening, for all who have died from COVID-19, we especially remember Father Stephen+ and keep in our prayers Rayelenn, Emily, Elizabeth, Sadie, and Emma.

Tonight, we offer a Collect and a prayer:

A Collect for Saturdays (BCP99)
Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Protection (BCP832)
Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications and prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants towards the attainment of everlasting salvation; that, among all the changes and chances of this mortal life, they may ever be defended by thy gracious and ready help; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We normally do not address parish business in the Saturday emails but there are 3 important pieces of information for everyone to be aware of:

(1)  As promised, the church membership to BJ’s has been renewed.  If you currently hold a membership card, you can now visit the store to renew your individual membership.  If you are interested in joining BJ’s, under the St. Edward’s membership, please contact the parish office for the document you would need to bring to customer service.  Our church membership allows individuals to receive a discounted yearly rate.

(2)  2020 Giving Statements are completed, printed out, and in the parish office.  If you would like your statement emailed to you, this week, please let the parish office know.  There will be an opportunity for you to stop by church, this Thursday & Friday, to pick up consecrated wafers and materials for the March 7th Annual Meeting, so you could pick up your statement at that time. If statements are not requested to be sent via email, or picked up, this week, we will mail them out by week’s end.   We want to thank everyone for their understanding and patience, as we were delayed in the generating of the statements for 2020.

(3)  Please look for a separate email at the beginning of the week that specifically addresses the Annual Meeting Zoom details, when to pick up your Annual Meeting materials, as well as voting via absentee ballot if you are unable to attend the March 7th meeting.  This is a very important event in the life of our parish, so we encourage all, who are able, to attend!

Be well.  Stay safe.  Keep the faith.

St. Edward’s Thursday Message – February 25th

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

As we journey towards our Second Sunday in Lent, please know that we have several spiritual offerings between now and our 10:00 AM Sunday  Rite II service. These can be silent and contemplative moments, or moments spent in community of spiritual formation, prayer, and lament. We continue to rest, reflect, repent, and recharge, using these shared and silent spaces as a way to know more about ourselves, to show our love for one another, and to be comforted in knowing that we are constantly renewed with God’s strength. The details for our offerings are listed below.

As we enter this evening, let us pray a Collect for our protection through the night (BCP 133) and let us pray for Joy in God’s Creation (BCP 814) for the blessings of this beautiful day.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Joy in God’s Creation
O heavenly Father, who hast filled the world with beauty: Open our eyes to behold thy gracious hand in all thy works; that, rejoicing in thy whole creation, we may learn to serve thee with gladness; for the sake of him through whom all things were made, thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We continue to pray for Rayelenn, Emily, and Elizabeth and surround them with love in their grief.  A wonderful ministry is to send a card or handwritten note, just to say a simple “hello!”

St. Edward’s Monday Message – February 15th

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

It was so nice to see people stop by church today!  Many faces we have not seen in a long time.  Thank you for taking the time to visit us –  it makes our day special. We encourage you to stop by anytime, Monday – Friday, 11 AM – 3 PM, but especially in the next 2 days to pick up consecrated wafers, ashes, Ash Wednesday prayer cards, Scepters, Lenten Meditation booklets, and NEW parish directories.  All good things to start you on your Lenten journey and to stay connected with each other.

As we begin our individual and private Lenten journeys, remember, if we persevere, we will thrive, as we always have done.

It seems perfect to start the week with A Collect for the Presence of Christ, from The Book of Common Prayer, page 124.

A Collect for the Presence of Christ
Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.

In speaking with Rayelenn today, she expressed such gratitude for the wonderful selection of delicious baked goods.  But, now we would like to “mix it up” a little bit,  and swap out “baked goods” for soups an stews.  So, if you are a soup or stew maker, please consider contacting the parish office to let us know if you would like to make your favorite dish for us to deliver to Rayelenn on our every-other-Thursday schedule.  Meat, chicken, spicy, or hearty – whatever your specialty may be.  NO seafood, please.  As they say, “we are accepting reservations!”  This is a wonderful ministry that is providing comfort in immeasurable ways.

Sending handwritten cards and notes, with memories, photos, and favorite stories to Rayelenn, Emily, and Elizabeth is another wonderful ministry that is providing great comfort.

Mrs. Rayelenn Sparks Casey
429 Camp Meeting Road
Landisville, PA 17538

Please email the parish office for the mailing addresses for Emily and Elizabeth.

Be well.  Stay safe.  Keep the faith.

Sunday Online Worship at St. Edward’s – Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany, February 7, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

We welcome you to our online worship and ministry offerings for this Sunday, the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany.  All essential links are noted below.

Due to the alarming rise in cases within Lancaster County and here in our own township, I prayerfully request that we continue to refrain from gathering with other parishioners in public groups, particularly in restaurants, indoor spaces, or even outdoors without masks. COVID-19 is not a hoax.  We are all in this together, and honoring our parish community, by complying with the recommendations set forth during this time, conveys our love for God in Christ, the members of our parish family, and the wider community.

Here are two links that may be helpful:

We have posted our special edition of the February Scepter, dedicated to the memory of The Reverend Canon Stephen C. We continue to offer our love and support to Rayelenn, Emily, and Elizabeth by staying in touch with cards and letters of comfort.

Please contact the parish office for the addresses of Emily Casey and Elizabeth Casey Stauffer.

As we close our message for tonight, let us take a moment to pray for those in our parish family, and in our greater human family, who are suffering from COVID19, and all manner of illness, loneliness, anxiety, and fear for their general well-being in these stressful times.  Let us remember to be kind to each other and reach out to one another with a phone call, a note, an email and lift each other up as we continue to persevere through these extraordinary times.

In our Friday Lunch & Learn, we have been discovering the Ministration to the Sick portion of The Book of Common Prayer, beginning on page 453.  It is filled with wonderful prayers that can be a comfort to ourselves, and in saying to and for one another.  Tonight, we offer a prayer from Prayers for the Sick, on page 458.

For Recovery from Sickness

O God, the strength of the weak and the comfort of sufferers: Mercifully accept our prayers, and grant to your servant(s) the help of your power, that their sickness may be turned into health, and our sorrow into joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be well.  Stay safe.  Keep the faith.

Michelle

Sunday Online Worship at St. Edward’s – Third Sunday after the Epiphany: January 24, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

We welcome you to our online worship and ministry offerings for this Sunday, the Third Sunday after the Epiphany.

Father Rick +

It is hard not to look up to the sky, day or night, these days, in reflection and prayer. For me, it is quite meditative and truly speaks to God’s awesome presence in our lives.

It brings to my mind, from the Book of Common Prayer, page 88-89, a portion of this Canticle:

12 A Song of Creation Benedicite, omnia opera Domini

I The Cosmic Order
Glorify the Lord, you angels and all powers of the Lord, *
O heavens and all waters above the heavens.
Sun and moon and stars of the sky, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.

Glorify the Lord, every shower of rain and fall of dew, *
all winds and fire and heat.
Winter and summer, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.

Glorify the Lord, O chill and cold, *
drops of dew and flakes of snow.
Frost and cold, ice and sleet, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.

Glorify the Lord, O nights and days, *
O shining light and enfolding dark. Storm clouds and thunderbolts, glorify the Lord, *
praise him and highly exalt him for ever.

Let us keep Rayelenn, Emily, Elizabeth, Sadie, and Emma in our deep prayer as they continue to grieve the loss of Stephen+.

Cards of condolence and comfort can be sent to:
Mrs. Rayelenn Sparks Casey
429 Camp Meeting Road
Landisville, PA 17538

Be well.  Stay safe.  Keep the faith.

At St. Edward’s, we have two ministries, we would like to call to your attention, in need of parishioner support:

Our first, is our continued support of the Hempfield Area Food Pantry. So many of our neighbors are in dire need. St. Edward’s provided, generously, to this social outreach in 2020. The need continues in 2021, for both financial and food donations. Here is a food wish list for January: Spaghetti; Spaghetti sauce; Mac and cheese; Jelly; Peanut butter; Canned pears; Canned peaches; Instant oatmeal; Regular oatmeal. Let us continue our tradition of generosity for those less fortunate than ourselves.

Our second, is our Altar Flower ministry. Thank you to so many who have responded in just this last week. We have gone from an empty flower chart to 12 commitments so far for 2021. We need just 29 more to fill our calendar! It is through the generous donations of parishioners that we beautify our altar shelves with fresh flowers. These symbolize for us, a lifting up of God’s creation and are displayed in memory of those whom we love, and in thanksgiving for the blessings in our lives. Such a subtle, yet important, component of our worship services at St. Edward’s. We seek donations of $100 for our altar flowers, with the remembrance printed in our bulletin and read during the Prayers of the People. Please contact the parish office with questions on how to donate and submit your remembrance.

February Scepter: In Memory of The Rev. Canon Stephen C. Casey Our February Scepter issue will be a special issue devoted to the life, legacy, and ministry of The Rev. Canon Stephen C. Casey, encompassing his 20 years, as our rector, at St. Edward’s. We all have wonderful images and memories to share about Stephen and we encourage you to share those with us for this issue. Please forward your images and written words to the parish office by Wednesday, January 27th. We will forward them on to Mac Miller, so she can work her magic in creating this special issue.

We have exciting Spiritual Formation opportunities to engage in starting in January, 2021.  Click here to get an overview, but please pay attention to weekly emails which will provide the Zoom invitation details.

St. Edward’s Thursday Message – January 21st

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

We continue to keep Rayelenn, Emily, and Elizabeth in our deepest prayers as they grieve the loss of Stephen+.  Cards and messages of condolence, love, hope, and prayer, mailed to the Casey family, can be sent to:

Mrs. Rayelenn Sparks Casey

Landisville, PA 17538

May these Psalm passages from The Book of Common Prayer, Page 115-116 from Daily Evening Prayer:  Rite II bring you comfort as we enter into the night.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel; my heart teaches me, night after night. I have set the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not fall. Psalm 16:7, 8

If I say, “Surely the darkness will cover me, and the light around me turn to night,” darkness is not dark to you, O Lord; the night is as bright as the day; darkness and light to you are both alike. Psalm 139:10, 11

Please know that Father Rick is available via phone, text, email, or in-person for any pastoral needs or expressions of lament, as he continues to hold each of you in the loving prayer of his heart.  May God’s peace be with us in our grief.

February Scepter:  In Memory of The Rev. Canon Stephen C. Casey

We continue to offer consecrated wafers for our service of Holy Eucharist this Sunday, safely packaged and available in the narthex.  Please enter through our front doors between the hours of 11 AM – 3 PM.

We will be compiling a new parish directory which will be available on February 7th. So, when you come by to pick up your special edition of the Scepter you can pick up a 2021 directory.  We do not assume everyone wants to be in the parish directory, so if you are new to our parish and would like to be included, and have not previously informed the parish office, please let us know your contact information, via email, no later than January 29th.  If you are currently in the directory and have changes to your information, please let us know so we can print the most current contact information for you!
