Worship at St. Edward’s – Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost: Proper 23 – October 10, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

Father Rick and all of us at St. Edward’s welcome you to our Sunday worship, tomorrow, the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost:  Proper 23.  Whether you will be joining us in-person, or via our live stream on our St. Edward’s YouTube Channel, please know we are glad to be worshipping with you!  All of the important links you need to our YouTube channel and our Sunday service bulletins are listed below.  For this Sunday we welcome our Bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Audrey Cady Scanlan.  Bishop Scanlan will be the Celebrant, Officiant, and Preacher at our 8 AM Rite I, and our 10 AM Rite II.  The 10 AM service will include the Sacramental Rites of Confirmation and Reception.  A wonderful day to be with us at St. Edward’s! 

If you are joining us for in-person worship and fellowship, we prayerfully ask that you wear your mask as we gather together in community.

Let us enter our afternoon, on this last day of the week, with two prayers, for peace, community, and better understanding:

For the Parish
Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We are now in WEEK TWO of the St. Edward’s Basket Raffle Fundraiser with ticket sales are tomorrow between services, and for 15 minutes after the 10 AM service, in the parish hall. It truly is a wonderful event this year with 33 curated baskets and fun surprises with special drawings each week.  Join us in supporting what has become our MAJOR fundraising event of the year to support the mission and ministry of St. Edward’s!  Tell your friends and family.  Our catalog is also available to download by clicking HERE.

Last evening we announced that in our first week we raised $1,440 and we also announced the winners of our first week’s drawing!

As we pray for Father Rick, Katrina, Ricky, and Christian for safe travels (and joy!) during their vacation, we welcome The Reverend Tim Small, as he returns to St. Edward’s to celebrate and preach, this Sunday.  For those who may not know Tim+, he was installed as vicar of St. Edward’s in 1984, when we were a mission church worshipping at the Union Hall on Nissley Road, and shepherded us to our groundbreaking of where we worship today! It is a blessing to have Tim+, and his wife Betsy, back at St. Edward’s this weekend!

While we will celebrate the Fourth of July, with our family gatherings, cookouts, fireworks, or perhaps some quietude in nature, let us take a moment and say a prayer for our human family, all God’s creation, and a prayer:

For our Country – The Book of Common Prayer, pg 820
Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. At the Rite II 10:15 AM service, we will be celebrating the sacrament of Holy Baptism of Sadie Raye Casey Stauffer and Emma Michele Casey Stauffer, twin daughters of Elizabeth Clare Casey and Kevin Michael Casey Stauffer and granddaughters of Rayelenn Sparks Casey and our beloved, dearly departed Stephen+. Please join us, in-person, or via live stream, for the service.

An Episcopalian prison chaplain, Deacon Stacey Catigano, keeps a library for prisoners, and she could use some Bibles and other devotional or inspirational titles to circulate among prisoners. You can either donate books or money to buy them. Just drop off your donations in the narthex or make out a check to St. Edward’s with “books for prisoners” in the memo line.  To learn more about this project, stop by the bookcase in the narthex and pick up a flyer and browse some of the books we have already collected.  Let us show our love for our incarcerated brothers and sisters.   You can also click here to see what kinds of books are needed.

Worship at St. Edward’s: Seventh Sunday of Easter – May 16, 2021

Dear parishioners and friends of St. Edward’s,

With the CDC guidance that came out on Thursday afternoon suggesting that those who are vaccinated can now go without a mask in most circumstances, the bishop has communicated with clergy and lay leaders, via email, regarding “what to do in church this weekend.” (If you have not seen the new guidelines, you can find them here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html).

For now, until the bishop’s Task Force meets next week, we would encourage you for this Sunday to continue under the current recommended protocols that include mask wearing, social distancing, communion in one kind and no singing. There are still those among us who are not vaccinated, and, in Christian community, we must care for those who are most vulnerable, including our children who cannot yet get the vaccine and those who for health reasons, have not yet been vaccinated.

We thank you as we honor our love for God in Christ and continue to care for one another.

Let us pray this Collect for Guidance
Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Needle Arts Ministry to meet again!!!!
Commencing Tuesday evening, May 25th at 7 pm this group will meet in the lounge area of the Christian Education wing at St. Edward’s.  PLEASE JOIN US in this time of fellowship, learning, and listening to one another as we engage in all needle arts. . . from knitting, to crochet, cross stitch, to mending clothing.  Whatever needle arts you engage in, you are WELCOME!

Do you know that 1 pint of blood can save three lives?  The precious resource of blood is in constant need by  area medical facilities, and St. Edward’s is offering an opportunity for our parishioners to donate a pint. Mark Saturday, June 5, on your calendar and then watch for the soon-to-be-announced sign-up link to complete the required registration.  The event will be held in our parish hall.  Questions? What a great day with team St. Edward’s as we walked together, prayed together, and shared stories during our “walk your way” Race Against Racism in downtown Lancaster.  It was a beautiful day both in weather and in being in fellowship!  Thank you to all who participated in this invitational opportunity to be in solidarity for naming the need to create change and showing that working together can make a difference.   If you took photos and would like to share them on social media, please tag them: #rarlancaster

In Lancaster County, we continue to move towards wider distribution of vaccines, and within our diocese, we are adhering to the same safety protocols we submitted in 2020 for our in-person worship.  We are all in this together, and honoring our parish community, by continuing to comply with the recommendations set forth during this time, conveys our love for God in Christ, the members of our parish family, and the wider community.

At St. Edward’s today, it was glorious to see so many people stop by to view our Memorial Garden monument that was installed this past week. We will be adding the final touches to the monument in the next 10 days. 

To see people meander up the garden path and be able to sit and pay respects to their loved ones and touch the name plaques on the monument brought tears to my eyes.  As I was out in the garden, sitting next to St. Francis, the patron saint of ecology and animals, and as we approach Earth Day, this week, as well as make wonderful preparations for the most important event in the life of our parish and for Father Rick+ – a Celebration of a New Ministry,  it seems like a wonderful opportunity to pray these words by St. Francis:

You are holy, Lord, the only God,
and your deeds are wonderful.
You are strong.

You are the Most High.

For those who feel comfortable with coming to church, we are fortunate to be able to hold in-person worship on Sundays at 8 AM – Rite I and 10:15 AM – Rite II. We hope that you will join us!  We continue to follow healthy practices for your comfort and safety and we are mindfully complying with mitigation efforts through the governor’s office, as well as our diocesan office.

Welcome to Congregational Care!  Each Saturday, we will include in our messages any submissions we receive from our parish community, as we invite you to share prayer requests or news about yourselves or your family. We believe this outreach to be incredibly important to keep our spiritual community connected to each other and to Jesus Christ, our Lord, as we walk in love with one another in our daily journeys.  Please submit your “news” to the parish office by Friday of each week and we will feature it in the Saturday email, bringing it to our hearts and minds in our Sunday prayers.

For this week, Joyce Kamm would like us to pray for her son, Mike, who has been on lockdown for seven months, and all other persons who are incarcerated.  Pray for their strength to endure the isolation of 23.5 hours a day due to COVID.  For the love of Jesus to permeate throughout the prisons.

We also want to send our prayers to Rose Dixon and her entire family as she continues to be a strong fighter in battling her illness. News from her daughter, Cheryl, this week, that Rose had to be hospitalized and is quite weak.  Rose is now resting at home.  Please keep Rose in your prayers and we encourage you to send notes and cards this week.

What a wonderful event this was!  We are so pleased to offer you our 2020 Fall Fundaiser Dinner Auction & Variety Show!  It may have been 100% virtual this year, but it was an incredible outpouring of talent and fun!

All Saints’ Day is Sunday, November 1st.  We have placed clipboards in the narthex for people to write the name(s) of loved ones they would like remembered at both the 8 AM Rite I and 10:15 Rite II service(s).   You may also email the parish office the names to be placed on the list, if that is more comfortable and easy for you to do.  Please note:  The parish office will be closed from October 28th – November 2nd, so it is important that you get your names in prior to that date.  Please write clearly, if you complete the form at church, so that we take care in the pronunciation of your loved ones names.  Father Rick will be reading the names, at each service, following communion.

Hempfield Area Food Pantry:   Thank you to St. Edward’s for your continued support to the HAFP.  In September, you contributed 110 pounds of food items to the pantry.

During the month of September….we served 145 families which included 148 children, 305 adults, 104 seniors for a total 557 people served…9 new families were registered. 34 volunteers donated 517 hours to the pantry.

The pantry is currently requesting the following items: Spam, prune juice, chicken and beef broth, large peanut butter, large jelly, 2 lb. packs of rice, canned pears, instant and regular oatmeal, cream of celery soup, cream of chicken soup, boxed pastas (ziti, rotini, etc.), canned tomatoes, pancake syrup, canned fruit cocktail.

The Community Aid bin is scheduled to be removed in the next 10 days.  Please continue to support this passive form of fundraising by bringing your soft goods to the donation center on Good Drive (near Columbia Avenue) and when you drop off your items reference St. Edward’s partner #40036.  We will earn money towards our social outreach! Every penny counts.

The funeral for Boyer Veitch will be held at St. Edward’s on Saturday, October 24th at 11:00 AM.  While it is a private family service, there will be a public visitation from 10:00 AM – 11:AM at St. Edward’s.  We will be following all health and safety protocols for social distancing and we ask that all visitors please wear a mask.  We encourage all to join us for the service, via live stream, to honor the memory of our brother and dear friend, Boyer.  Connect to the service via our  YouTube Channel .

We are pleased to announce that through the generous donation of Mary Veitch, in memory of Boyer Veitch, we will be replacing our sanctuary carpet in the upcoming month. The new color is called “Rest Assured” and you can view a sample of it above.  While this was not the first color choice of the rector and parish office, we consulted a professional designer, with further consultation and support from our vestry and altar guild members – Meredith Westgate, Julie Hoff, and Bev Hess, to assist us in choosing the best color for this most sacred space.  This choice was made with extensive discernment as to what is best in complementing all surfaces: from the black flooring, to the woodwork of our pews and altar, to the stonework of our glorious altar wall, as well as our seasonal altar hangings, and the transition into the narthex. We also considered the durability and appropriateness to the missional context of our space into the future. Please know that should anyone in the parish have concerns or feelings about this choice I will make myself available to you, to walk through such concerns.

St. Edward’s Monday Message – October 19th

Dear parishioners & friends of St. Edward’s,

There is so much going on this week with the basket raffle officially closed, today!  Now, the preparations are in play for creating our virtual variety show, drawing for the basket winners, all of the filming and editing that Father Rick is so graciously giving of his time and talent, all to make this a special evening for us at St. Edward’s.  We offer this event to our friends, family, and the wider community, as well, in what promises to be an amazing night, on October 24th.  So many moving parts and volunteers to thank, as well as the awesome support from everyone, with their generous purchasing of raffle tickets, dinner tickets, and the basket donations that made this all possible!


We are pleased to report that we raised $5,100!  An extraordinary outpouring of love for our ministry, here, at St. Edward’s and so meaningful in every year, but, most especially, in this season that we are in, now, as we care for each other with our commitment to our faith, and our community.

It does make one stop for a moment to take a deep breath and take it all in as a sign of God’s grace in all the ways he guides us. And, reminds us, as we experience the serenity and beauty of our other major project, the beautification of our Memorial Garden, to take the time to honor those who came before us, or left us too soon, and remember them and keep them in our daily prayers, our hearts, and in our minds, always and everywhere.

So blessed by it all and we thank you!
