12 Noon: We welcome all to visit our beautiful spiritual home. Light refreshments will be served throughout the day.
12 Noon – 6 PM: Our resident fiber arts guild, the Woolwrights, will be holding a silent auction of their craft to benefit their educational fund, which enables training and education in the fiber arts. Bid on your favorite pieces, visit (and experience) their demonstration tables featuring fine rug hooking, wide cut, proddy skill, and rug hooking with alternate fabrics. There will be items to bid on with final bids announced at 6 PM and items to purchase to benefit Ukrainian relief efforts. One of their pieces for auction will be a panel from our stained-glass window!
4PM – 6 PM: Popular jazz ensemble, Swing Street, will perform a live concert featuring their wonderful blend of jazz standards and jazz adaptations. If you missed them in January 2020 or at our 40th anniversary celebration in 2021, now is your chance!!! They are a fantastic way to enjoy a musical afternoon in our sanctuary. A free-will offering will be collected.

We are now in WEEK TWO of the St. Edward’s Basket Raffle Fundraiser with ticket sales are tomorrow between services, and for 15 minutes after the 10 AM service, in the parish hall. It truly is a wonderful event this year with 33 curated baskets and fun surprises with special drawings each week. Blessing of the Animals: Friday, October 1st starting at 6 PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 West Chestnut Street, Lancaster. In partnership with St. Edward’s and St. Thomas, St. John’s will be hosting the Blessing of the Animals service in honor of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of the environment and animals. The service will be outside, in their courtyard. For more information, please visit the St. John’s website. Backpack Drive
It’s Back-to-School time again! As in the past, we will be helping Hempfield students be prepared for school; but, this year will be a little different. Instead of collecting crayons, pencils, etc., we will be collecting backpacks! Specifically, we are looking for backpacks for older students. Think plain colors and large sized. If you’re not sure of what to buy, you may donate by writing a check to St. Ed’s with ‘backpack drive’ on the memo line and Faith in Action will buy the backpack. All backpacks will be donated to Hempfield Student Services. School social workers will gift the backpacks to the students that they work with and help in other ways. Any additional funds will go toward replacement ipad charging cords. We have experienced such generosity, gathering 40 backpacks and over $550 in monetary donations! We will be accepting donations through August 22nd and will be blessing the back packs next Sunday. If you are still considering donating to this important Faith in Action initiative, please prayerfully consider making a monetary donation, as there is a need for replacement cords and calculators that we could fulfill by supplementing our backpack donations with a monetary gift.

Parish News: Confirmation/Reception Classes: If you would like to be a candidate for Confirmation or Reception into the Episcopal Church, during our Bishop Visitation on Sunday, October 10th, please contact the parish office by Friday, August 20th. Once we have a list gathered, we will send out an email to choose dates/times for 3 weeks of classes + make-up session, aligned with the schedule Father Rick mentioned on Sunday. Stephen Ministry Training: Father Rick and Dina Ishler will be commencing training of Stephen Ministers in September. We want to express our deep gratitude for the generosity of our parish family in participating in The Reverend Canon Stephen C. Casey Memorial Fund. Through your donations, we will embark on the beautification projects outlined in the booklet presented earlier this summer, with anticipated completion dates throughout the fall. Most people experience the beauty of our spiritual home on Sundays. But, suppose, on a day when you are out for a drive, running an errand, coming to the Wednesday service, or need a moment for prayer, reflection, or just some quiet time, you could go to a beautiful garden and find a sliver of a peaceful moment? You can! We invite you to stop by, anytime, and visit our Memorial Garden space. Sit on the benches, listen to the water in the fountain, take in some deep breathes and enjoy the beauty and solitude. This space is not only in reverence for our loved ones who have gone before us, but a meditative space for all to find that peace in a busy day.

As we prepare for a new week and our day of simplicity, it is amazing to witness God’s eternal creation in the rising sun and the blue sky. As I put together packets of consecrated wafers for those who cannot attend in-person worship but would like to receive communion in one kind as they watch our Sunday service, I meditate on the Invitation we place on each packet: “Feed on Him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.” And it is this very Invitation that reminds us, we walk by faith, not by sight, and we walk in love, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

It’s Back-to-School time again! As in the past, we will be helping Hempfield students be prepared for school; but, this year will be a little different. Instead of collecting crayons, pencils, etc., we will be collecting backpacks! Specifically, we are looking for backpacks for older students. Think plain colors and large sized. If you’re not sure of what to buy, you may donate by writing a check to St. Ed’s with ‘backpack drive’ on the memo line and Faith in Action will buy the backpack. All backpacks will be donated to Hempfield Student Services. School social workers will gift the backpacks to the students that they work with and help in other ways. Any additional funds will go toward replacement ipad charging cords. We are off to a fantastic start – more than 10 backpacks have been donated to date. Keep them coming and thank you!!

With the CDC guidance that came out on Thursday afternoon suggesting that those who are vaccinated can now go without a mask in most circumstances, the bishop has communicated with clergy and lay leaders, via email, regarding “what to do in church this weekend.” (If you have not seen the new guidelines, you can find them here: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html).
For now, until the bishop’s Task Force meets next week, we would encourage you for this Sunday to continue under the current recommended protocols that include mask wearing, social distancing, communion in one kind and no singing. There are still those among us who are not vaccinated, and, in Christian community, we must care for those who are most vulnerable, including our children who cannot yet get the vaccine and those who for health reasons, have not yet been vaccinated.
We thank you as we honor our love for God in Christ and continue to care for one another.

What a great day with team St. Edward’s as we walked together, prayed together, and shared stories during our “walk your way” Race Against Racism in downtown Lancaster. It was a beautiful day both in weather and in being in fellowship! An Episcopalian prison chaplain, Deacon Stacey Catigano, keeps a library for prisoners, and she could use some Bibles and other devotional or inspirational titles to circulate among prisoners. You can either donate books or money to buy them. Just drop off your donations in the narthex or make out a check to St. Edward’s with “books for prisoners” in the memo line. To learn more about this project, stop by the bookcase in the narthex and pick up a flyer and browse some of the books we have already collected. As we celebrate Mother’s Day, tomorrow, we honor all mothers, and all the loving and mothering hearts and souls in our world, who give their love and compassion so freely, every day, and in the times in our lives that require us to turn to them, at any given moment, to help see us through. We offer this blessing from the book, Earth Gospel, based on Hosea 14:7.

This Sunday is also known as Rogation Sunday, on the Episcopal calendar, which is followed by Rogation Days – Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, leading to the feast of the Ascension, which is on Thursday. The word Rogation is from the Latin noun, rogatio, meaning “asking” (the verb is rogare, “to ask”). These are days of fasting and prayer in which we are asking for God’s blessing on agriculture and industry. We will read the collect for Rogation Sunday, tomorrow, in our services. I cannot adequately express my sense of deep gratitude for the thoughtfulness and the generosity of our community around the events of last week’s Celebration of a New Ministry. In addition to the blessing of our bishop and the beautiful liturgy that accompanied the Installation, I was completely blown away by the virtual reception that we enjoyed together this past Sunday. Without knowing what would be happening or who would be participating, the incredible efforts of our Installation Committee (Julie Hoff, Meredith Westgate, Nancy Mannion, Christina McLaughlin, Herb Johnston, and Mike Freshwater) facilitated a gathering that touched my heart and stirred my spirit. Please know that Trina, Ricky, Christian, and I have been truly moved by the cards and the well wishes. I’ve spent time this week breathing in an awareness of gratitude, reading every card, and praying for each of you.
Though we haven’t been able to spend very much time together physically in our first year together, the support and the prayers of our parish family have provided me with a palpable feeling of acceptance and of home here at St. Edward’s. I am so very excited for what the future holds for us, and it is an honor to be serving as your rector. With humble appreciation,

Pledges/giving can be mailed to the church, and we also have an easy-to-use “Give to St. Edward’s” button on our website that links to our secure Paypal page, as well as a “Donate” button on our YouTube Channel home page.
To assist parishes, the diocese has set up online giving for each parish. If you feel comfortable making your weekly giving or pledge donation in this manner (it is a secure giving tool), simply go to the diocesan web site, click on the tab up top and it will take you to a page where you can scroll down, find St. Edward’s, and continue with making your contribution!
